Big Little Lies review: Everyone is on the struggle bus this week

This week’s Big Little Lies focuses on guilt following the death of Perry Wright. Safe to say, everyone’s on the struggle bus.

Last week’s Big Little Lies showed us not everything is okay in Monterey. This week, that escalated, showing there are more problems going on than what happened with Perry Wright.

The episode begins with Bonnie struggling the most, going on walks and just keeping to herself. While she is the one who pushed Perry down the stairs, she isn’t the only one at fault. She also isn’t the only one suffering. Celeste can’t sleep and is taking Ambien to help, but nearly dies in a car crash because she continues to have flashbacks about her dead husband. Despite everything he did to her, she still misses him.

From there, the episode unfolds into a mess of everyone’s lives unraveling all at once. Renata’s husband is taken by the FBI for money; Ed finds out that Madeline cheated on him; and Chloe tells all the kids that Ziggy is actually Max and Josh’s brother. And that’s just their drama. Bonnie is still trying to cope and her mother is in town, making matters worse.

While watching these women unravel is intense but satisfying to watch purely for the acting, the important aspects of the episode come from them opening up about old wounds. Celeste tells Mary Louise about her son’s violence, and in another heartbreaking scene, Jane tells Ziggy about his father and how he came to be. We watch as two mothers struggle to decide what truths their children should know. While Jane tells Ziggy everything about her rape, Celeste questions telling her boys the truth.

The end of the episode finds all of the women in their own distress as they try to keep their families together (or bring their families together as one in the case of Jane and Celeste).

It seems as if Jane and Celeste are going to try and have their boys all come together and be a family and, with how this episode is set up, they might be the only family still somewhat together in Monterey.

Maybe with the tear in Madeline’s marriage, we will see new men come into her life and get some other amazing actors on the show. Or maybe her marriage won’t fall apart and she’ll work it out. To be quite honest, Madeline’s problems are probably the easiest to digest at the moment but we’ll have to see where the rest of season 2 takes us on Big Little Lies.

Not everything is fine in Monterey and if their marriages and their families weren’t enough, there is also someone clearly snooping around the death of Perry Wright. We can’t wait to see what is coming next for the Monterey Five!
