Nintendo announced its June additions for the Nintendo Switch Online members. They really seem to be digging deep into the NES collection

Nintendo announced its new additions to the Switch Online content that starts on June 12. And no, it does not include Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge.

Below is the official video announcement from Nintendo:

Starting June 12, Switch Online members can play Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Volleyball, and City Connection. So… is it worth it to buy a membership this month? Below is our breakdown.

Double Dragon II was initially an arcade game that was ported to the NES in 1990. It’s a side-scrolling fighter game for up to two players that’s about as standard as they come. There’s not much you can do wrong. Plus, the music is catchy.

Actually, the arcade game thing is a theme for this month, as the same is true for City Connection. Do you want to outrun the cops while also dropping paint along the way? Then is this the game for you! The controls are sometimes a little finicky — get ready to hold down the A button a lot — but the overall gameplay isn’t difficult.

And then there’s Volleyball. Released in 1987 on the NES, it really hasn’t aged well. The controls are all out of whack and frustrating to utilize. You’re controlling all six of your players at once, and then when it comes time to respond to a returning ball, the controls just go haywire — where it might land gives you potential control over the players closest, but if it’s slightly more one way than another, it’s anyone’s guess as to what players will end up responding.

Honestly, with this month’s announcement, it feels like frustration is beginning to mount for members. It feels like Nintendo is really digging deep into their vault for each month’s new games. How many people want to play volleyball in a video game if it isn’t the Wii?

This month feels like a bit of a stretch. I come from a Nintendo family and I never played any of this month’s additions. And when you compare it to what Xbox and PlayStation are offering in June, it looks not-so-stellar.

Nintendo fans can only continue to hold out hope that one day — hopefully soon — we will get an SNES offering for the month.
