Dorian Electra

Dorian Electra has very different origins than most of the artists on this list. Firstly, they identify as genderfluid and use they/them pronouns, but also they got their start by making music videos about politics and philosophy while in college, and that’s when the ball started rolling.

Electra continued to make music with a deeper meaning for years to come, such as their music video Forever Young: A Love Song to Ray Kurzweil, a tribute to the futurist Ray Kurzweil. They branched out to do more work on feminism and queer history before reaching a not-quite-mainstream-but-big-in-the-queer-music-world level.

Electra collaborated with Charli XCX (Noticing a trend here? Clearly Charli knows the artists worth knowing in the queer world!) on the track “Femmebot” along with queer rapper Mykki Blanco in 2017. They also released the single “Jackpot” in collaboration with Grindr’s online publication Into More, which addressed gender fluidity in a more casual, less educational way.

In 2018, Electra released three new tracks, “Career Boy,” “VIP,” and “Man To Man,” which demonstrated how seamlessly the artist flirts with that duality between male and female, while calling out toxic masculinity.

They also announced their upcoming debut album, Flamboyant, which will be released on July 17. Even though that may be a little late for Pride in most cities, it doesn’t mean they can’t find a place on your regular summer playlist. Let’s be honest, is there really a difference between your summer playlist and your Pride playlists? Both have bops on bops on bops!
