Christine and The Queens

Christine and The Queens, also known as just Chris, is another artist who blurs the line of gender. The performer, who’s originally from France, identifies as genderqueer and pansexual. They tend to switch between he and she pronouns while writing songs about love, which is something you don’t often hear in popular music.

Chris first adopted the moniker Christine & The Queens when they released their debut EP in 2011 after meeting a group of drag queen musicians who became their backing band, whom they dubbed The Queens. Over the next few years, they started garnering attention after opening for popular acts like Lykke Li and Marina and the Diamonds, which helped bring them to an international audience.

Their debut album, Chaleur humaine, or “Human Warmth” in English, was released in 2014 and after gaining attention from an English audience, it was re-released as Christine in 2015 with new songs and an English version of the song “Christine.”

Chris is known for their androgynous style, and also for their signature choreographed dances that accompany their songs, both in music videos and live performances. They released their second album Chris last September, which stuck to their trademark style and sound, like on the lead single “Girlfriend” (or the French version, “Damn, dis-moi”).

Their songs often have a funky, electronic sound to them, which will help give your Pride events a chiller vibe, but with enough synth to still get people moving and grooving. You don’t need to know French to enjoy Chris’ music, even if you won’t know what they’re saying sometimes!
