God of Broken Things – Cameron Johnston
Cameron Johnston kicked off his Age of Tyranny series last year by releasing The Traitor God, and he’s following up this June with the second installment in the series: God of Broken Things. And judging by the synopsis for God of Broken Things, Johnston’s newest novel may be even more epic than his debut.
God of Broken Things picks up after the events of the first book, following magician Edrin Walker after he’s defeated the dangerous beast sent by the Skallgrim. Unfortunately, his worries haven’t ended with that victory. The monster tore apart Setharis and managed to infect the magical elite with mind-controlling parasites before going down — leaving the survivors of the battle in quite a predicament.
To make matters worse, Edrin’s lost control of his own magical abilities following his fight with the Skallgrim’s monster. Not only does he find himself captured by and vulnerable to the whims of another magus, but he’s forced to escape and gather a band of villains to stop the Skallgrim army that’s on the march. Time isn’t on Edrin’s side, and neither are the daemons and other threats blocking his path.
With an expanding world and even more at stake for our main character, God of Broken Things isn’t a sequel SFF readers will want to wait on, especially if they enjoyed The Traitor God. There’s plenty of action and moral grey space in this novel, two things that make it well worth picking up on June 11.
