How will Supergirl wrap up what might be its best season to date? Catch tonight’s finale live using the information we compiled below.

When season 4 started, Supergirl was running on fumes. The previous two seasons had been wildly uneven, smothering intriguing ideas and thoughtful character beats with slipshod, tonally confused plotting.

Like its heroine, the show was experiencing an identity crisis, unsure of what it was and what it wanted to be. Of course, certain behind-the-scenes shakeups didn’t help.

Imagine our surprise that, 21 episodes later, season 4 shaping up to be the show’s strongest run yet. Showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner scaled back the space travel and ramped up the ideological conflict, and in the process, they rediscovered the key to Supergirl’s identity: its heart.

Last week’s penultimate episode provided a prime example, culminating in a scene so brazenly sentimental it circled around to being genuinely moving. After a brutal confrontation with Red Daughter, Supergirl was on the brink of death when Alex arrived, her memories restored.

Thanks to her tearful pleas, Kara fought her way back to life, and the Danvers sisters’ love appeared to strike a chord in Red Daughter. Unfortunately, having outlived her usefulness, Red Daughter was promptly killed by Lex Luthor in his scheme to position himself as a savior.

Can Supergirl stick the landing? The season finale, titled “The Quest for Peace,” airs tonight. An official synopsis is below, courtesy of The CW:

"LEX LUTHOR RETURNS — Lex Luthor (guest star Jon Cryer) descends upon Washington, DC and summons Lena (Katie McGrath) and Lillian Luthor (guest star Brenda Strong) to the White House. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) realizes she has one last chance to stop Lex and turns to the power of the press to help her."

A lot of threads need to be tied up in a short amount of time. In addition to the Luthor family drama, there’s James, whose powers revealed adverse side effects just as he was beginning to get used to them; Nia and Manchester Black, who were sent with countless other aliens through a mysterious portal; Brainy, who lost his ability to feel emotions; and Ben Lockwood, who learned that he was just a pawn in Lex’s plan.

We’re especially curious and nervous about Ben Lockwood. It’s possible that he will join the effort to take down Lex out of resentment, but it’s also hard to conceive of a scenario in which he gets even semi-redeemed that doesn’t feel like a copout. Lex may have pushed him to create a movement, but the cause was still his own.

Jesse Warn directs a story by Queller and Rovner and teleplay by Rob Wright and Derek Simon.
