Game of Thrones fashion: Daenerys and Cersei are closer than ever
Although they’re not wearing their similar dresses in the same scene, Game of Thrones drew some subtle parallels between Daenerys and Cersei.
Game of Thrones hasn’t spent much time inspecting the parallels between Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister, although you could very easily argue that Tyrion’s speech to his sister at the end of “The Last of the Starks” could be aimed at Daenerys, too.
It has, however, actually drawn some parallels between the two queens claimant of Westeros in their costuming.
This will be better done through illustration first, so let’s look at the pictures. This is the best image we have of the red and black dress Daenerys wears during the celebration feast and after, when she tries to get back together with Jon Snow only to be rejected:

Meanwhile, here’s Cersei as she appears in the episode:

Of course, there are plenty of differences, reflecting each woman’s different style. On the basic level, Cersei has always favored more ornate pieces, and Daenerys’ is very plain but obviously well-made.
What’s most interesting of what they share, however, is the color. Neither House Lannister nor House Targaryen actually favor wine red specifically as their house color, although the color palette reference is obvious. Due to the different lighting, it’s impossible to tell whether or not these dresses are the same color, but they look close enough that it seems as though it might be intentional.
In an episode which sees Daenerys lose another one of her children, be passed over in favor of men for praise mostly because they’re men, and finding herself more and more unable to trust those around her, why wouldn’t she dress like Cersei, who has gone through all of these things and more? It’d be too obvious for them to wear these similar outfits in the scene they technically share, and it makes it easier to discern them as two separate figures.
Here’s what Daenerys is wearing in that scene, though, as she walks away:

This is yet another neutral coat with red accents, but instead of the full-on gray or the pure white, this coat almost looks dingy. Yes, it’s been worn through battle and more, but that same rich red that Cersei wears keeps peeking through. Compare it to the Lannister banners in the background, and you’ll see it’s pretty clearly a different shade of red.
At the end of the day, Cersei and Daenerys have the same goal: the Iron Throne. Though they might not be aware, their journeys are more similar than they appear at first glance, and that’s being carried through to their clothes. In an episode that had to edit out a coffee cup, it’s a subtle touch that makes us worried for the final two episodes of the show.
