HBO’s new period drama Gentleman Jack, based on the true story of Anne Lister, a 19th century British industrialist and landowner, as well as a woman quite ahead of her time, continues tonight.

Last week’s installment saw Anne Lister introduce herself to Ann Walker, the rich, lonely and largely isolated heiress in town. Per her fourth-wall breaking monologues, Anne is initially courting Ann for her wealth and resources, as any man in her position might have done if given the chance. However, the charming flirtation between the two women certainly seems genuine, and one has to wonder if Anne is so unaffected as she might pretend.

Certainly, enough to wonder how the evolution of their courtship might go this week.

The official synopsis for this episode is pretty vague as far as details go, but promises us what sounds like more adorable Ann/Anne flirtation.

"Lister and Ann Walker’s liaison takes a thrilling turn, as mutual acquaintances begin to chatter about their relationship."

A “thrilling turn”, huh? That certainly doesn’t sound as disinterested as Anne Lister might have us believe.

They’re certainly getting awfully cozy in this trailer, is what I’m saying.

Half of the fun of period drama romances is the will they/won’t they aspect of the series’ main relationship, and Anne and Ann are no different here. When will Ann give into her attraction to Anne? How long will it take for Lister to realize her feelings for her supposed “mark” are rather genuine, after all?

And what’s going to happen when the rest of Halifax discovers them?

We’ll have to tune in and find out.
