Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4: Your death recap

Following the Battle of Winterfell, our heroes are ready to take down the second biggest baddie in all of Westeros — Cersei Lannister. Find out who wasn’t so lucky to survive right here.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the fourth episode of Game of Thrones‘ eighth season.

One of the biggest critiques fan had for last week’s Game of Thrones episode was how the show handled deaths. Basically, fans felt there wasn’t enough death. And, admittedly, with an episode that was hyped to be an all-out, epic showdown between Jon Snow and the Night King, you could say we were beyond shocked with what went down.

Yes, there were deaths, and yes, there was a showdown with the Night King, but as you all know now, things didn’t happen the way we’d expect.

Same goes for tonight’s emotional rollercoaster of an episode. While the death count was low, it was still horrible to witness. Below, we’ll recap those who perished during tonight’s episode of Game of Thrones.

Rhaegal (presumably)

It’s hard to say which death was hardest to watch tonight. But anyone who’s ever loved their pet so much they see it as their own baby can understand a bit of the pain Daenerys experienced tonight.

Daenerys’ dragon Rhaegal is taken down by the jerkiest bro we’ve ever seen on the show, Euron Greyjoy. As Daenerys heads back home towards Dragonstone, she’s approached by Euron’s fleet. Euron has a scorpion on hand, and in a move that only someone like Cruella de Vil would applaud, he kills Dany’s beloved Rhaegal.

Now, note that we say presumably here. We saw Rhaegal go down, but based on the teaser for next week’s episode, Euron is staring up at the sky and he looks terrified. Could it be Rhaegal survived? There’s a small, small, small chance Rhaegal was hit and was just severely injured. But, for the sake of this death recap, we’re going to bet he’s down for good. (If he makes a comeback though, we’re all for it!)

Missandei

Safe to say, Daenerys suffers the most this episode because soon after she loses her dragon (well, let’s be real, her child), she also loses her best friend.

Following Euron’s attack against Daenerys’ ships, Missandei goes missing. Grey Worm and Daenerys are concerned of where she’s gone, and at the end of tonight’s episode, we learned just where she went. Missandei was captured by Euron, and ends up being beheaded by The Mountain.

Something we will absolutely get into on Culturess soon is how we’ve essentially lost the best representation we had for women of color on the show now that Missandei is gone. Seriously, Game of Thrones, why. Why.

We know these two deaths will not go down easily for the Mother of Dragons. If you wanted the Mad Queen, Cersei, oh you’re about to get some version of her. We’re not sure what kind of show we’re about to get now that Daenerys is all kinds of fired up. We have two episodes to go folks, and if this episode is any indication, anything can and will happen.

Game of Thrones continues next Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
