FX’s What We Do in the Shadows continues this Wednesday. Here’s everything you need to know to watch “Baron’s Night Out” online and not miss a minute.
When What We Do in the Shadows first started, the story was pretty basic. Four vampire roommates live with one another on Staten Island, too lazy to carry out their original charge of dominating the New World.
They haven’t even really taken over anything beyond their own block. If that.
This all came to a head in the series’ pilot when “The Baron,” an ancient European vampire who is somehow in charge of this sort of thing arrives to see how they’re doing.
He helpfully passed out before he could realize that Nandor, Lazzlo, and Nadja are abject failures, and the show has basically kept him confined to their basement since then.
Some of us (read: me) may have assumed we’d never actually see this particular bit of What We Do in the Shadows’ plot again. Wrong!
Apparently the Baron is finally about to resurface in the story once more. In what is maybe the weirdest way possible.
Yes, he wants to go to a club.
Per the official synopsis:
"The Baron awakens from his slumber and demands to experience the wonders of the New World in a night out in the town."
It’s not entirely clear why a centuries old vampire wants to go a rave with the same creatures he longs to subjugate, but sure, let’s go with it.
If anything, it might make this particular bit of the story more palatable.
What We Do in the Shadows is at its best – and funniest – when the show inserts these weirdo vampires into our real world and makes them live by its rules. It’s why the general plot of “City Council” is so entertaining and why the snippets of Nandor and friends in the animal shelter in “Animal Control” are its standout moments.
To put it bluntly, no one is watching this show to see whether the vampires manage to actually conquer Staten Island. Or even to watch them try.
We’re here to see them go to the grocery store, and that kind of thing.
So, it’s natural to be a bit apprehensive about an installment that seems to revolve around the most vampire-ish of the show’s plots.
But, at least the trailer’s funny! (And the idea of the Baron at a rave is pretty great.)
Mark me down as someone who is already fairly confused about how this ancient, desiccated monster is wondering around New York raves without anyone commenting on his (frankly, disgusting) appearance. So, I guess we’ll see what happens?
