Shadowhunters review: The final war has begun

Clary and Jonathan are finally free of each other, and yet, things have gotten worse for the Shadowhunters. There’s just one more fight left.

Oh Dark Clary, you devious, demonic joy – we hardly knew you.

We return to our regularly scheduled Fairchild programming in this week’s Shadowhunters, and it is admittedly sad to see her go. Clary spent just two episodes fully tethered to Jonathan, and the evil siblings were so good at being bad.

They were so good that not only did they manage to successfully kidnap the Seelie Queen – a particularly impressive feat, given Jace’s impact at the club – but they also secured the Morningstar sword.

As it turns out, Seelies are happy to pay ransom if their queen is at stake. But that doesn’t mean they’re above setting up ambushes at the same time.

And so, despite Clary’s promise, there is indeed a rematch between Jonathan and Jace. It’s one that was surprisingly underwhelming though. Thanks to a quick assist from Alec, Jonathan is temporarily disoriented, and slapped into cuffs.

This writer was hoping for more between the two J.C.’s, but perhaps that comes next week.

In the meantime, Clary has become a skilled fighter. Isabelle is one of the most skilled fighters among the Nephilim, and Clary made their duel look like child’s play. It isn’t until Simon pops in that Isabelle manages to knock Morningstar away from Clary.

Using Simon may not have been what Isabelle wanted, but it was an excellent ploy by the writers’ room to remind us that normal Clary is still in there; she does still consider Simon her best friend. Arguably even more poignant was the decision to have Jace be the one to finally stab Clary with Glorious.

He dropped her off a roof as the Owl, but couldn’t stand the idea of hurting Clary, even in training, after Sebastian-Jonathan got into his dreams. Still, he had to get his Clary back. This moment couldn’t have been any clearer a declaration of love for Clace.

But now that Clary and Jonathan are apart, things have only gotten more dire. If Clary was influenced by Jonathan’s demonic nature through the rune, it should follow that he was influenced by her goodness. Without that – and now, with wings apparently – Jonathan is on a demonic tear.

Literally, he created a tear between Edom and Alicante. It took roughly four minutes for the demon towers to fall, and the Mortal War to begin.

Oddly enough, Lilith wasn’t leading the charge. Are we assuming she just decided to stay home? (Very okay with that theory, for what it’s worth). Theoretically, the wards Asmodeus put in place to contain Lilith should be faulty at this point. She has Cain now, and Asmodeus is focused on things in the human realm.

Even a Prince of Hell isn’t as slick as he thinks though. Thanks to Maryse, Magnus figured out what his father did in a matter of days, and he’s not too pleased about it. In this case, revenge is a dish best served suddenly, and unconsciously.

After sending his father into an apparent abyss, Magnus jets off to help his now-fiancé – yes, we got the Malec proposal we’ve been waiting for! – and seal the gateway Jonathan opened. Unfortunately, that also means going straight to the source, where Magnus’s magic is more powerful.

It’s hard to believe we’ve seen the last of Asmodeus though, especially with the Shadowhunters headed straight to Edom to save Magnus next week.

Fortunately, there’s only one casualty this week, and it’s not even because of Jonathan. But it was  a hefty one; Jordan Kyle is officially no more. He deserved more, but at least he went out with redemption.

Next week, the body count will likely be much higher. We’ve got exactly one battle left Shadowfam. Is anyone ready for it?

Shadowhunters airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on Freeform.
