Hermione Granger is not a Mary Sue, she’s just a smart girl which is fine

In the world of “every woman who is good at something is a Mary Sue”, let’s examine why Hermione Granger doesn’t fit that description and why being a Mary Sue is also fine.

Hermione Granger is a character that we’ve all looked up to for quite some time. She’s brave, strong, and smart. But now she’s a Mary Sue? This terminology is usually thrown around by sexist men who want to say that a character is ‘less than’ because she’s too perfect.

The idea is that a ‘Mary Sue’ is a female character with no flaws who is just really good at everything thrown their way. You know, not a description of Hermione Granger. But also a description that would be fine for any male character but because women can’t be heroes, our terminology has a negative connotation.

Anyway, the problem is that Hermione is also a deeply flawed character. She lets her cleverness cloud her judgment and is worried that she won’t come off intelligently rather than letting herself make mistakes first and not after she fights it. Hermione Granger is flawed and if you don’t think so, then you’re just looking at the wrong aspects of her characters.

Her flaws aren’t a weakness either, they’re what make her human and make her the kind of character we can all look to and appreciate in the series. That’s why so many of us love her and what she stands for. So take your Mary Sue argument out of here but also, being a Mary Sue is cool too.

Being a Mary Sue is totally fine but at the same time, maybe learn what a Mary Sue is before you keep talking about it in the wrong way.
