Arrow season 7 episode 20 live stream: Watch online

Roy comes back to town as Arrow prepares for the final stretch of the season. Read below for all the information you need on tonight’s episode.

Let’s be honest: the Ninth Circle isn’t especially compelling as an antagonist. Sure, they are a super-shadowy and, allegedly, super-influential terrorist organization, but Arrow hasn’t given much explanation as to what exactly their goal or philosophy is. What makes them different from the League of Assassins? Or the crime organization that Diaz was involved with last season?

Even as a pretext for conflict between Oliver and Emiko, it lacks weight. While their fight scenes are fun and Sea Shimooka has an arresting presence, Arrow simply hasn’t had enough time to turn Emiko into a fully developed character. Her identity wasn’t revealed until the second half of the season, and since then, she has been shrouded in mystery. Her decision to turn against Dante in “Spartan” felt abrupt; we don’t buy that she would take Oliver at his word or that she was ever really fooled by Dante.

More compelling are the relationships between the heroes: Felicity and Alena, Dinah and Rene, and, in last week’s episode, Diggle and his stepfather. These relationships are more complex than a conflict between good and bad, instead revealing different sides of the characters.

Fortunately, Arrow has been savvy enough to foreground those relationships over whatever is going on with the Ninth Circle. It looks like tonight’s episode, titled “Confessions,” will continue the trend. Below is the official plot synopsis, courtesy of The CW:

"ARSENAL RETURNS TO HELP THE TEAM — When they learn of an upcoming attack on the city, Team Arrow calls Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) to help them stop the Ninth Circle. However, things go awry and there is massive collateral damage. As Captain of the SCPD, Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) investigates what happened in an episode that takes on a true crime narrative and tone."

Roy is back (in the present-day story)! He isn’t the first old friend to return to Star City after a long absence: in “Lost Canary,” Sara got a chance to work out her feelings over Quentin’s death. Since Thea, the person with whom he has the strongest bond, is gone, it will be interesting to see what Roy brings to the current Team Arrow.
