Water will be a key element to the “spread” of the Upside Down

The episode titles were released for the third season, and one thing was very obvious: There is a theme centered around water in their titles. So what does the theory say? Basically, that water is either going to be a metaphor for the growth and spreading of the Upside Down, or water will have a more prominent role in Stranger Things 3.

We know that the Upside Down has grown. It’s either that, or we just didn’t know how much of Hawkins it had taken over until we saw the mirror image at the end of season 2. So the idea that it is spreading — or perhaps flowing — makes sense. At the same time, Eleven has used water to connect to the Upside Down.

Maybe the water connection in the titles goes back to Eleven and her connecting to the Upside Down. Is she going to have to go back into the world she wanted to escape from? Possibly, and, in doing so, she will have to use water to connect to it.

It’d be the easiest explanation as to why so many of the titles have a water theme. Since we’ve already seen her connected to water in past seasons, Eleven might be the reason we know how the Upside Down was created. Through her connection, we’ll probably be learning more and more about this world she existed in.
