Shadowhunters review: Big brother is watching

Three Shadowhunters in a weird love triangle walk into a Downworld club with a kidnapping plot. What could possibly go wrong?

The end is near Shadowfam, and let’s get real: Team Edom is looking awfully strong.

Asmodeus is back in the real world, Clary is officially on Team Evil, and Lilith has Cain by her side. When the Morgenstern kids find the Morningstar sword and raise an army from Edom, Lilith will likely be leading the troops, with near foolproof protection.

With the series finale just two weeks away, there’s no time for a break in the action, and as such, this week picks up just minutes after where we left things last week.

Hoping to minimize Clary’s time on Team Evil, Jace is ready to go undercover. Using a fire message, he tells Clary that his love for her is more important than his loyalty to the Clave and he just wants to be with her.

Even under the hold of a demonic rune, Clary loves him too. That love is an effective reminder that Clary is still in there – and a good comfort that Shadowhunters isn’t going to go Game of Thrones on us.

Jonathan isn’t happy about it, but agrees to meet with Jace and only kill him if necessary. Jace is smart though; he comes unarmed, with no stele, and no immediate cause for concern for either of the Morgensterns.

But Jonathan is smart too. He knows Jace’s true motivations, and makes Jace well aware that he’ll be watching his “brother”.

It’s easy to forget that both Jace and Jonathan were raised by Valentine, but in moments like these where they face off, armed or not, it’s painfully clear. You may not want to feel any empathy or sympathy for Jonathan getting the short straw in life, but at this point, it’s hard not to.

In fairness, he’s right about Jace’s end goal. So of course he wouldn’t fill Jace in on the plan to get Morningstar – but Clary does. They’re going to kidnap the Seelie Queen.

If you audibly guffawed at this moment, you aren’t alone. Jonathan’s made a lot of bold moves, and this one might top them all. But with Clary and Jace under his thumb, it’s not impossible, and that’s what worries Jace. On the upside, at least the Institute knows what’s up!

Thanks to those Seelie rings, Jace has been telepathically communicating with Alec from Prague. The thing is, Alec can’t exactly do anything. Izzy still doesn’t have the Heavenly Fire ready to go, and if he alerts Shadowhunters in the area, Jace’s cover will be blown. Talk about a no-win situation.

Well, there’s one win. Jace gets to go clubbing with his girlfriend, and thanks to Seelie drugs, it is a heated experience. For book readers, it was yet another joyous tie-in – if you were to go open a copy of City of Lost Souls, you’d find the scene is almost directly lifted from the page.

Unfortunately, it’s also the moment where Jace slips up. As soon as he loses control over his body, the Seelie ring reveals itself. Jonathan, observant as ever, catches it immediately and for a moment,  it looks like Jace might be the major death that fans are worried about.

Clary does love him though, enough to simply portal him back to the Institute, just in time to fly past Izzy and the gang, who have successfully recreated a version of Glorious, thanks to help from Luke’s sister.

Now there’s just one hurdle left: getting to Clary and Jonathan before they find Morningstar.  It doesn’t seem too likely though, assuming that red-flamed sword from the original season promo is what it looks like.

Shadowhunters airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on Freeform.
