HBO’s new period drama Gentleman Jack premieres tonight, and aims to tell the story of a remarkable – and largely unknown – woman. Here’s everything you need to know to watch “I Was Just Passing…” online.

It’s important for viewers to realize going in that Gentleman Jack probably won’t be the sort of period drama they’re used to.

Rather than a series about sweeping vistas and the hunt for a husband, it’s primarily about a woman, on her own, trying to live life on her own terms. That probably shouldn’t be a particularly revolutionary story in 2019, but in this particular genre, it kind of is.

Suranne Jones stars as Anne Lister, a 19th century British landowner and industrialist who not only embraced traditionally male business roles, she also openly loved women – and eventually married one.

The series comes from British writing powerhouse Sally Wainwright – of Happy Valley fame – and is based on Anne Lister’s real life diaries, which were not only full of the day-to-day minutiae of her life, but also coded passages that described her romantic relationships with other women.

Jones and Wainwright were both excited about the opportunity to bring the story of a relatively unknown woman who fought to live an authentic life to the small screen, and to make a period drama with a more modern feel. (Spoiler alert: They’ve definitely succeeded.)
