Game of Thrones season 8 episode 2: Tyrion Lannister might be in trouble

Tensions between Tyrion and Daenerys are higher than ever, and things aren’t looking good for the Hand of the Queen this season.

Ever since Daenerys and Tyrion reached the shores of Westeros, their relationship with one another has become increasingly tense. Although Daenerys once trusted Tyrion enough to make him her Hand of the Queen, she’s begun questioning his allegiance, particularly where his family is concerned. It’s natural that she’d be uncomfortable with the fact that they’re fighting against his brother and sister, but things have reached an all time low between the two of them.

During “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, Jaime Lannister stands in the Great Hall of Winterfell while the Northerners and Daenerys determine what to do with him. Daenerys seems set on punishing him for his crimes, and when Tyrion moves to defend his older brother, she doesn’t take the gesture very well. Not only does she immediately shut him down for misjudging his sister, but she accuses him of being loyal to his siblings to the point of holding a knife to her throat.

There have been theories predicting that Tyrion will betray Daenerys before the end of the series, and her actions just might lead him to do so. While he probably wouldn’t have thought about deposing his queen prior to all of her accusations, he might change his mind when he realizes that he can no longer temper her the way he once did. The queen’s decisions have become more and more rash over the past two seasons, and Tyrion’s doubts are becoming obvious. Her pushing him away won’t help the situation.

Tyrion obviously can sense that he’s in danger, too. He even tells Jorah Mormont and Varys that one of them will probably be Hand of the Queen before long, which doesn’t bode well for his character. We hope he’s wrong, but the way Daenerys has been acting suggests otherwise.

Thankfully, Jorah steps in to defend the younger Lannister brother. He approaches Daenerys to tell her that she made the correct decision in choosing Tyrion as her Hand, a sentiment that Sansa also echoes during her conversation with the queen.

Most of the other characters realize that Tyrion is a good person in spite of his flaws and mistakes, and they’re willing to tell their queen as much. Let’s just hope that she’s listening.
