Diggle looks for help from an unlikely source in the effort to stop the Ninth Circle. Read below for information on this week’s Arrow episode.

On Arrow this season, Diggle has managed to mostly stay above the fray. Working with Lyla, he kept his involvement in vigilante activities to a minimum, seldom venturing beyond the safety of the DEO headquarters. Although he has gone in the field more since leaving the DEO, he serves mostly as back-up and emotional support for Oliver — a dynamic reminiscent of their relationship in season 1.

If Diggle’s presence on the show has felt somewhat diminished of late, it was at least worth it to see actor David Ramsey direct an episode, “Past Sins,” which remains a high point of the season.

And it appears that Arrow will rectify things this week with an episode titled “Spartan.” You can read the official synopsis below, courtesy of The CW:

"ERNIE HUDSON (“GHOSTBUSTERS”) GUEST STARS — After the Ninth Circle delivers a major setback for Team Arrow, Diggle (David Ramsey) reluctantly reaches out to a Four-Star General of the Defense Intelligence Agency (guest star Ernie Hudson) for help, despite unresolved tension from their past. Meanwhile, Oliver (Stephen Amell) discovers a piece of information that he believes will turn Emiko (Sea Shimooka) against the Ninth Circle. Alena (guest star Kacey Rohl) returns with an interesting proposal for Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards)."

Diggle’s arc over the past seven seasons has essentially been a series of moral compromises. He was never entirely honorable, though; after all, he was in the military. It’s more that before joining Team Arrow, he didn’t question the morality of his actions. As a soldier, he accepted that authority figures had good intentions and the ends justified the means.

Now, though, he has become disillusioned. At the DEO, he was a leader, responsible for giving orders rather than just following them. He understands how much responsibility it takes to be a leader – and how easy it is to abuse that responsibility. Whatever tension Diggle shares with this four-star general, it will be a test of how much he has changed since his army days.

Somehow, it’s now Oliver who seems like the naïve one. Of course, this is a case where viewers have more information than the characters; we know that Emiko is a major player in the Ninth Circle rather than just a pawn. But Oliver’s refusal to listen when his sister repeatedly refuses his help feels more delusional than optimistic. Suffice to say, she is nothing like Thea.

Avi Youabian directs from a script by Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes.
