The Lies of Locke Lamora – Scott Lynch
Despite the fact that fans are still awaiting the fourth book in Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastard series, his first three installments often go forgotten in the world of SFF readers, which is really a shame given how dark and full of twists they are. The Lies of Locke Lamora and its sequels are perfect for fans of heist plots and morally questionable characters, and Lynch does a fantastic job of putting both elements onto the page.
The Lies of Locke Lamora is set in the city of Camorr, where it’s difficult to survive as an orphan. Locke Lamora manages it, however, landing himself in the care of an expert con artist. As the years go by, Locke eventually finds himself the leader of the band of thieves called the Gentleman Bastards, and his reputation for trickery is unrivaled. With the help of his friends, it seems like Locke can pull off anything, and he certainly does try to.
The problem is, Locke has a tendency to take his schemes too far—an understandable flaw when he’s always gotten away with his cons. But when Locke becomes caught up in a coup between the city’s most formidable rulers, he might be in over his head for the first time in his career. That could have serious consequences for him and his gang.
Lynch’s complex characters and worldbuilding are certainly reasons to pick up The Lies of Locke Lamora, but the ease with which he writes Locke’s schemes and the pitfalls that follow will also have readers hooked. But, be warned: Lynch is about as brutal with his characters as George R.R. Martin. The Lies of Locke Lamora is certainly not for readers looking for a happy story.
