People are re-examining Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts movies
Johnny Depp has been a topic of contention for many Potter fans for quite some time and, yet again, we’re talking about his casting as Grindelwald and what it means.
Saying that fans have been fighting over Johnny Depp’s casting in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would be an understatement. He has a been a point of contention since the allegations against him came out and it seems as if Warner Bros. is now reexamining his involvement in the series.
What’s annoying about this is that many complained prior to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald even began filming but Warner Bros. kept him on as Grindelwald but now that the film didn’t do well, they’re willing to reexamine? What about all the fans who voiced their concerns prior to the film even came out?
That isn’t to say that fans didn’t like him as Grindelwald. Many did and still want him to remain a part of the series but it is interesting that now Warner Bros. cares about Depp’s involvement after we’ve very clearly seen a decline in interest over the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series.
If they do, in fact, recast Depp, it is going to be interesting to see how they fix it within the storyline. He wouldn’t be the first actor recast in Harry Potter history but he would be the first recast because of fan outrage. (Richard Harris was recast after his untimely death.) So…what will Warner Bros. do? We’ll have to wait and see.
