Jon will cede the throne for Daenerys

While Jon is technically the heir to the throne, we know that Jon is basically done with war and politics. His time as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch was more than enough responsibility for one lifetime, and it ended with quite a few knives sticking out of his chest. If Sansa hadn’t shown up at Castle Black when she did, it’s very likely Jon would have ridden south and never returned. Jon doesn’t exactly want the burden of leadership anymore.

Even as King in the North, Jon originally wanted Sansa to take control of Winterfell. Only after his people chose him did Jon take on the crown. And while he took the responsibility seriously, he also decided that Daenerys was a better choice to lead them by the end of the seventh season.

With that in mind, Jon might want to keep his Targaryen roots a secret from the rest of Westeros. He pledged himself to Daenerys, and he might be willing to keep that pledge, even if it means ceding the throne to her. Most fans want to see Daenerys on the Iron Throne at the end—and not just because she gained power through marriage—so this would be a satisfying ending in that regard. It would also allow Jon some much-needed rest after the fight against the Night King.
