Sansa and Tyrion’s marriage comes back into play somehow

Given everything that Sansa has been through, it’s easy to forget some of them. Like the time she was forced to marry Tyrion Lannister by her former fiancée, King Joffrey. While much of the ceremony and its aftermath were grim and humiliating, Tyrion himself was kind to her. He promised not to force himself on her (sad that this is such an admirable move, but here we are) and the two build an uneasy friendship of sorts while living in a veritable hell kingdom.

Following Joffrey’s death, Sansa flees King’s Landing with Petyr Baelish and Tyrion is arrested for the crime. The two suddenly have their own problems to deal with, and haven’t seen one another since. Sansa returned to the North and was forced to marry the monstrous Ramsay Bolton, while Tyrion fled Westeros and ultimately ended up at the side of Daenerys Targaryen. With Dany’s forces now headed to Winterfell, it seems obvious that Sansa and Tyrion will see one another again – and be forced to confront the fact that, technically, they’re still married. And that fact could help shape the future of the kingdom well past the final battle with the White Walkers.

Will their previously existing connection be enough to allow Daenerys to trust Sansa with the North? Will their relationship be used as a sort of healing opportunity for the realm? (Look, Lannisters and Starks making peace! Everyone else can, too!)

Perhaps this is all wishful thinking, and the two will simply release one another from their vows, or Tyrion will remain Hand of the Queen or go off to re-found the Night’s Watch at Castle Black. Or maybe he’ll be dead. These things are all imminently possible, of course. But it does feel as though Sansa and Tyrion’s marriage is a bit of unfinished business between them, that season 8 should probably address.
