Season 4
So many iconic Game of Thrones deaths happened during the show’s fourth season, including Joffrey’s long-awaited demise. Of course, that particular death left fans celebrating instead of sobbing. But, apart from Joffrey’s death, season 4 held heartbreaking fates for many of the series’ major characters, results of the increasing conflicts in the North and King’s Landing.
Ygritte
Ygritte shaped Jon’s storyline for the first few seasons of the series, showing him that the beliefs he’d grown up with weren’t necessarily the truth, especially when it came to the Wildlings. She played a crucial role in the storyline beyond the Wall, and her character gave viewers a bit of humor and plenty of spunk. When she was reunited with Jon, only to be shot with an arrow, it was a depressing moment. Jon’s expression certainly didn’t make fans feel any better about it, nor did his final moments holding her as the battle continued around them.
Oberyn Martell
Oberyn Martell is another fan favorite whose time on Game of Thrones was short-lived, with his character only lasting one season before being killed off. Oberyn was an impressive character, skilled in physical battles and battles of wit. His willingness to stand as Tyrion’s champion during his trial by combat only made fans love him more, but it wound up leading to his downfall. The worst part is that Oberyn could have beaten the Mountain if his pride hadn’t gotten the best of him.
Grenn and Pyp
Grenn and Pyp were two of Jon’s closest friends from the Night’s Watch, and they stood by him until the very end. When the Wildlings attacked the Wall, the two of them fought valiantly to defend their brothers, and they were both killed in the process. Along with Ygritte’s, their deaths were probably the saddest from “The Watchers on the Wall.”
Jojen Reed
Jojen warned his friends and Game of Thrones fans that his death was inevitable, but that didn’t make it any less surprising when he was killed during “The Children.” Not only did fans have to watch him get stabbed by wights, but they also had to witness Meera’s decision to burn him before the wights could turn him into one of them.
Tywin Lannister
Not many fans would classify Tywin Lannister’s death as “heartbreaking,” but whether you loved him or hated him, you can’t deny that Tywin commanded a certain amount of respect. He might have deserved it when Tyrion shot him with a crossbow—on the toilet no less—but that doesn’t mean fans weren’t sad to see him go. His presence was a powerful one, and it’s been missed in the show’s later seasons.
