Brooklyn Nine-Nine review: Jake and Amy have an open debate about kids

They probably should have had a conversation before they got married but Jake and Amy finally start talking about kids on this week’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Jake Peralta didn’t have the best father figure in his life growing up and on this week’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he opened up about his fear of having his own kids. That doesn’t mean that Amy was too keen on it.

Our favorite couple is celebrating their first year of marriage when Amy mentions that they should try to start having kids in a few years, something that Jake thought was her attempt at being undercover. When he voices this to Amy, the two start to have a real conversation about their future and what having kids would mean for them.

So, in true Amy fashion, she calls up Captain Holt to get ready to moderate a debate between the two to try and see who is in the right, which isn’t the best way to have a discussion like this. Jake tries to tell that to Amy (resulting in Holt continually giving Amy points).

It doesn’t take long for Jake to realize that maybe he does want kids. This is aided by him being thrown into a life or death situation by a woman who wants the best life for her own son and granddaughter.

Pam, a woman who has been tormenting Jake and Amy during their entire hospital stake out, breaks into the room of the man they’re watching over. She has a bomb, and is ready to blow him up and everyone in the room.

Unfortunately, that includes Pam and Jake. While talking her down, Jake tells Pam that a life without her isn’t a fun life for her son and granddaughter, explaining that they need her. Pam eventually gives him the bomb and they leave the room.

In that moment though, when Jake sees what a life without kids and Amy would be like, he realizes he could be a father, especially if that fear that drove him to talking down Pam is the same fear that would lead him as a father.

They might not be having kids right away, and they definitely have a lot to figure out, — Amy still needs to become lieutenant before they can really think about it. But at least now, they both know that Jake’s fears won’t restrict him from being a father. Rather, it will fuel him into becoming the kind of dad his never was.

Also, how cute would it be seeing Jake and Amy have kids together? Jake would constantly get to be the fun dad while Amy has everything perfectly organized. It’d be adorable  — can we get this cute little family sooner rather than later?
