Netflix released the trailer for the documentary Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, a film documenting Beyoncé’s journey to Coachella in 2018.
Who else but Beyoncé can help us start the week off right? After news on Wednesday revealed Beyoncé would be releasing her own documentary, the trailer for said documentary finally released Monday morning.
The trailer also came with the announcement of the full title for the film, Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé. It documents Beyoncé’s road to her 2018 Coachella performance, pulling back the curtain on one of her greatest performances of all time.
There are a few notable appearances just in the trailer, including Jay-Z, Beyoncé’s sister Solange (who recently had to cancel her own Coachella performance for this weekend), and even little Sir and Rumi Carter, who have rarely made it into the public spotlight. This will likely be one of the most intimate looks into Beyoncé’s life, as she’s been very careful to make sure her private life stays private.
You can get a glimpse into the life of Beyoncé by watching the trailer for Homecoming below.
After watching the trailer, you’ll notice that the voice narrating this is not Beyoncé’s. It’s a clip taken from the late Maya Angelou, which already sets up the emotional tone for the documentary. In the clip, Angelou begins by saying, “What I really want to do is be a representative of my race– of the human race.” Angelou continues to talk about how she hopes to inspire others to be kind and to tell the truth.
It’s a heartfelt message, and one that’s even more emotional when you see that it’s a message Beyoncé tries to emulate herself. The trailer’s YouTube description describes her Coachella performance as a “cultural movement,” and it has very much become that. Tying her music with imagery of historically black colleges and universities, Beyoncé brought a piece of black culture to the masses. It’s true that music is a uniting force, and Beyoncé’s performance spoke to all people that night.
To keep this season of Beyoncé going, eventually, she’ll be releasing a new album with a mix of old and new songs. Plus, Beyoncé is relaunching her Ivy Park line through a deal with Adidas, creating new athleisure clothes and shoes for us all to slay all day in.
There’s no word on when Beyoncé’s new music or Ivy Park line will drop, but Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé will be out on Netflix on April 17.
