Rebecca Bunch has spent quite some time in West Covina. On the series finale of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, we witness her making her best decision yet.
We had to say goodbye to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend this week and not in a good way… in an “our heart is going to break every time we think about this beautiful show” kind of way. This week, Rebecca finally made her decision and, in a surprising turn of event, she decided to choose herself.
Throughout the series, Rebecca has struggled with her own self-worth, letting herself down each and every time because she thinks that’s what she has to do.
First, it was Josh. She let herself become accustomed to doing whatever she needed to to win his affection. And when she finally got it, everything fell apart.
Then came Greg. She loved him and he her, but they used each other, ruining their relationship for their own selfish needs. When he left, she was broken, which opened the door to a failed engagement to Josh and then Nathaniel.
But in the end, when all these men have come and gone, it was Rebecca who was left alone trying to find herself. And she did.
Watching her discover the songs in her head, seeing her own story as we saw it and telling that to Paula? It means that the joy we got from Rebecca is something she is planning on sharing to the world.
She didn’t pick a man. Perhaps, maybe, someday, she’ll end up with Josh, Greg, or Nathaniel but right now? She’s focused on herself and sharing her story, something we’ve wanted for her from the beginning.
This episode gave us the 11 o’clock number we’ve been waiting for all season, giving Rebecca the emotional depth that she was searching for within herself. She’s finally happy without it being at the expense of someone else. She is dealing with her own problems and making herself happy rather than throwing herself into another relationship and it shows the kind of growth we wanted to see in her character from the start.
Rebecca Bunch isn’t the kind of character that would fix her problems within an episode, which is why we willingly took these four years with her to learn and grow. Rebecca continued to try and find herself through love but, in doing so, found what her goals should have been all along.
Is Rebecca going to make her own musical? Will she fall in love with Josh, Greg, or Nathaniel? Or is she going to fall back into her own traps? Any of these things could be possible.
What we do know, and Rebecca does too, is that she has the world at her fingertips. We just hope that she continues to tell her story with the world, even if we don’t get to be a part of it week after week anymore.
