Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: New death possibly confirmed
After all of the ominous teases, a death in Game of Thrones season 8 shouldn’t be a surprise, but the method of this reveal is a bit of a shock.
Warning: If the Game of Thrones teasers so far have made you shake with possible spoilers, then this post might lead to even stronger shaking due to almost-certain spoilers.
Look, Game of Thrones is not being exactly subtle when it comes to season 8 promotions. Things are going to end poorly for at least some people, and we’d probably be disappointed if they didn’t. But HBO has been playing things fairly coy, inasmuch as implying that no one will survive is playing coy.
Not so with ET, who flat out went there in a recent story about Iain Glen and Emilia Clarke’s friendship outside of Game of Thrones. It’s actually quite touching, but there’s an aside that should set every fan’s mind whirling: “[Clarke] was the first person [Glen] texted after reading through Jorah [Mormont]’s final episode.”
Note specifically that ET doesn’t specify that Glen read through the final episode of the series, but “Jorah’s final episode,” specifically. That’s a pointed choice of words. However, that doesn’t mean that the two are mutually exclusive. Jorah’s last episode could very well be the last episode; however, it does open up the possibility that Jorah meets the Many-Faced God before the series comes to a close.
Jorah feels like a pretty good choice for a death. He’s essentially concluded his story by earning his redemption and being cured from his greyscale, but he’s still significant enough for his death to have meaning. Glen even seems to pick up on that, saying “I think he feels OK” about where he is in relation to Daenerys Targaryen.
That then turns the question to when Jorah could bite it. Episode 3, the battle for Winterfell, seems like the obvious choice, but there’s potential for a later death. What if Jorah, someone who’s been with Daenerys practically since the beginning, is part of the final price, either for the war efforts or for her chance to sit on the Iron Throne? Wouldn’t it mean even more for his death to come at the hands of the Khaleesi in some way, shape, or form, not just dying protecting her?
With the eighth and final season premiering on April 14, Game of Thrones fans don’t have much longer to wait.
