Avengers: Endgame characters: Who will die and who will survive?

James Rhodes / War Machine

If we’re honest, we’re not entirely sure about this one. Rhodey stands a fair chance of surviving, if anything just so he can visibly mourn Tony, but we also can’t really imagine him going into the next phase of Marvel’s universe.

His death would be awful to watch too, which means Marvel must surely be tempted. After all, what’s the point of all this if not devastating an overly invested audience? (Words that are no doubt written on every whiteboard in Marvel HQ.)

Chance of survival: Low to medium

Gamora

Gamora’s death was one of the hardest to witness in Infinity War, and due to her death before the Snapture, we are concerned it can’t be rectified.

However, with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 on the way, she has a far bigger chance than most in the low-survival gang, so who knows? Perhaps being manhandled off a cliff isn’t as final as it looks.

We bet it hurts though.

Chance of survival: Green but not forgotten (low to medium)

Queen Ramonda

Look, we’re not enjoying this either but if anyone from the Black Panther clan is going to kick the proverbial bucket, it’s more than likely to be Queen Ramonda, especially given Disney’s (and indeed, Marvel’s) track record with moms.

Not only would it reinforce the idea that no one is safe, not even those in Best Picture-nominated movies, it would also really hurt, which, as we’ve established, pleases Marvel greatly. If Ramonda lives, it shall only be because someone had a conscience about killing off Angela Bassett. We can only hope such sentiment prevails.

Chance of survival: Low to medium.

Drax the Destroyer

Of all the Guardians of the Galaxy, we reckon Drax is the most likely to die (apart from Gamora, who is in fact already dead). He’s a fan favorite, which means Marvel must have entered him into their own ghoul pool (we’ve mentioned the emotional throat punch right?) but he’s also not terribly important to the plot.

Burgeoning relationship with Mantis aside, and it’s quite far aside to the point where honestly we’re not invested at all, he’s got nothing keeping him anchored to this realm and he should be worried, we think. Sorry.

Chance of survival: Low to medium chance of clog-popping. (Yes, Drax, that’s an Earth metaphor.)

Loki Odinson

We’ve honestly given up guessing. Sorry.

Chance of survival:  ???

Nick Fury

We get the feeling Samuel L. Jackson wants to do other things. Nick Fury’s been through the mill: he’s faked his own death, witnessed alien fascist invasions, and been betrayed by a beloved pet. He’s simply had enough with these …superheroes on these …planets. And his demise would provide just the fodder the Avengers need to do some avenging.

But then again, he’s Fury, and a cameo could be quick, fun and, let’s be honest, lucrative work. We wonder if the door could ever be truly shut on this icon.

Chance of survival: Low to medium (we don’t really know, sorry).

Thor Odinson

Speaking of don’t know, what is going to happen to Thor Forget-Odin-He’s-Our-Son?!

He’s technically immortal, so we would have hoped that would put him in good stead but just look at what happened to Loki (possibly nothing, to be fair, but you get our point).

Surely Marvel can’t kill off Thor. Well, you can’t kill off both him and Cap in the same movie, anyway, not unless you want to traumatize a generation.

Having said that, this is Disney we’re talking about, and it has that track record. Argh, this is horrible.

Chance of survival: Unpredictably medium (again, sorry).

Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow

Black Widow’s death would serve little purpose but to prove to us again that no one is safe, but Cap’s seemingly inevitable demise would do that. To kill her off as well would be to rob us of one of Cap’s chief mourners. Everyone knows the saddest parts are when people surround a scene and cry, and ScarJo cries beautifully.

Then again, she’s extremely human, unlike the likes of Thor, and therefore vulnerable. We remain concerned.

Chance of survival: Rumors of her demise have (eight) legs.

Bruce Banner / The Hulk

The Hulk was having some performance issues in Infinity War, which makes it likely that he’ll absolutely come through in Endgame. Though he may be injured, we doubt he’ll be mortally so.

Like Black Widow, he’s a perfect mourner, especially given that he is one of few in both the Cap and Tony camps and rails against fighting.

But, still, as a Phase One hero, we can only be cautiously optimistic at this time. That’s our secret: we’re always worried.

Chance of survival: Medium.
