Spider-Man Far From Home: Mysterio’s costume looks awfully familiar
By Meg Dowell
Thanks to new promotional materials for the film, we now have a better idea of what Mysterio’s Spider-Man: Far From Home costume looks like, and fans are not disappointed with the results.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is only months away, and fans can’t stop talking about the new “mysterious” antagonist appearing opposite Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
The film’s villain, Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) is most likely based on the original comic book character, a failed special effects mastermind who turns his harmless creative ambitions into a powerful, deceptive act that could accomplish what so many comic book villains often aspire to achieve: Making a whole bunch of money and, maybe, taking over the world.
More iconic than the character himself is the costume he wears. In a move that disappointed literally no one, filmmakers have decided to make sure Mysterio’s costume looks as close to the original as possible.
We got our first look at Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio in the teaser trailer Sony released back in January. The teaser shows a brief glimpse of the character meeting Spidey for the first time under not-so-glamorous circumstances.
In the comics, one of Mysterio’s most infamous trademark looks is the fishbowl-like helmet he wears. It’s not completely apparent in the teaser, which means Marvel is either saving it for the first official full-length trailer or waiting to officially reveal it when the film is released in July.
New promotional materials for the film reveal Mysterio’s infamous helmet will, in fact, appear along with him in the movie, and have given a closer look:
One of the most magical parts of watching a superhero movie as a long-time comic book fan is getting to see your favorite characters come to life on screen — both in behavior and in appearance.
Fans always hold their breaths before these characters’ costume reveals, eager to see how closely they resemble the looks they remember from the comics. It’s also intriguing to see how creative costume designers can get with suits, masks, and other materials while paying homage to their expertly crafted origins.
Mysterio’s costume is one of many that looks like it was taken right out of a two-dimensional panel and transferred into the three-dimensional world. Our new villain must be a pretty significant one, for the film’s crew to have put in the effort to make him look exactly like he did in the comics.
While we haven’t seen much of Gyllenhaal in the movie quite yet, from the single line and several seconds of action we’ve gotten from the teaser so far, it’s hard to believe his performance as Spidey’s opposite will be anything but spectacular.
Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5, 2019.
