Unpacking the newly confusing storyline of Minerva McGonagall. Thanks, J.K.!
Ever since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, fans have been trying to figure out Minerva McGonagall’s timeline because it doesn’t really add up.
Minerva McGonagall is one of Hogwarts most trusted employees but that doesn’t mean she was old enough to be working at Hogwarts in the 1920s. Especially if she wasn’t teaching Transfiguration (since Dumbledore was supposedly teaching it. Not Defense Against the Dark Arts).
Essentially Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald makes a mess of the way we’ve known Hogwarts to have been. As far as we know, Dumbledore taught Transfiguration until he became headmaster. From there, McGonagall took over once she was old enough to be teaching. You know, since she was born in 1935 and not 1927 when Fantastic Beasts takes place.
So…where does this leave us with the mysterious McGonagall at Hogwarts? Many said she could have been a family member but, if that’s the case, it is a cheap shot to fans. Why have a character who is willingly acting like a favorite, yelling at the students, and have her be known as McGonagall? We know it couldn’t have been Minerva’s mother but maybe she has an aunt somewhere?
Whatever the deal is, it leaves us with a confusing storyline, loose ends, and a lot of questions about why Minerva McGonagall was alive and teaching at Hogwarts before she was even born! That’s some powerful witch right there! She should have been headmaster over Dumbledore if that’s the case.
