New Avengers: Endgame featurette is somber but offers hope for fallen heroes

Marvel’s new Avengers: Endgame featurette is a sad reminder of what we’ve lost, but offers a “shred of hope” for our fallen heroes in a post-snap universe.

“Imagine, if for the first time, our heroes all lost.”

Robert Downey Jr. starts off the latest Avengers: Endgame featurette by reflecting on the horrors of Infinity War and everything we lost in the final moments of the film. Following his quote, we hear a montage of tragic quotes, from Peter Parker’s “I don’t feel so good” to Vision’s “We are out of time.”

If that doesn’t already hit you in the feels, the rest of this featurette will certainly get you teary-eyed. Joining RDJ are Endgame stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and producer Kevin Feige. Together, they detail how Infinity War‘s tragedies have impacted our heroes as well as the MCU fandom.

“Everyone’s doing their best to keep their head above water but it’s kind of a losing battle,” Evans shares. “We lost, and we’re not used to losing.” The Avengers as well as their loyal fans certainly have lost a lot, and this clip is a harsh reminder of that.

All the same, we found a bit of hope within the context of the clip. When describing those who were taken by Thanos’ snap, Robert Downey Jr. says “half of the population of the universe has gone.” Feige later says “The fans’ reaction to the end of Infinity War when half their favorite characters turned to dust really was indicative of how emotionally connected the world has gotten to these characters.”

While these are snippets from likely lengthier sit-down interviews, not once do we hear the words “dead” or “gone forever” in this featurette. It may not be much, but that gives us a sliver of confidence those who disappeared can and will return.

As Chris Evans says at the end of the clip, our heroes have been hit hard but “it’s always easier to build people back up after they’ve been broken down.” They have a “shred of hope,” as do we, and that will be what inspires them to fight harder than ever before to get their friends back.
