“It Was a Good Day” – Ice Cube

Funny enough, Childish Gambino’s “Feels Like Summer” is reminiscent of the next music video on our list from Ice Cube for his 1993 single “It Was a Good Day.”

Ice Cube didn’t need any special effects, big celebrities, or major plot twists to make a great, memorable video that kind of felt like a sitcom. It opens on a family home and then we see Ice getting out of bed and getting ready for the day. He eats breakfast with his family, gets a call from a girl he likes, then heads out to drive around in his pimped out convertible. Everything is going right for him, so he sings about how it was such a good day.

Ice Cube continues to talk about all the good things that happened to him that day: the police didn’t pay him any attention, he played basketball with his boys, did some gambling, watched his own video on MTV, and hooked up with a girl he’s been trying to get for years. It gets a bit darker when he talks about how he hopes he’s alive for another 24 hours, how he didn’t have to use his gun, and how none of his friends died, so it’s a good day.

Not so fast, though. Just as he’s getting back home at 2 a.m., the police swarm him outside his house with helicopters and SWAT teams. He acts like nothing is happening and just walks through his front door as “to be continued” flashes on the screen. Now that Ice Cube’s an actor, he could totally spin this into a movie!
