Fantastic Beasts: If Voldemort could return Ralph Fiennes would reprise his role

Ralph Fiennes portrayed the iconic Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter. A role he would happily reprise for Fantastic Beasts if possible.

One of the wonderful things about the Fantastic Beasts franchise is how it connects to the world of Harry Potter. Many characters who featured in the original franchise have returned for the prequel, and we expect many more to return. One character who could potentially return is Lord Voldemort and Ralph Fiennes would happily reprise his role if it were possible.

Fiennes played the Dark Wizard in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire right through to the final Harry Potter movie. According to We Got This Covered, Fiennes appeared on BBC’s Newsnight and the conversation turned to his time playing the Dark Lord and Fantastic Beasts.

When asked about the idea of reprising his role Fiennes had the following to say:

"“Well, there are variants, aren’t there? Fantastic Beasts and things.”“I feel a kind of affection for Voldemort. So if there was a world in which Voldemort came back, I would be very possessive about wanting to reprise that.”"

This is certainly interesting to hear, however, the question of whether it is possible is the one we should address. Because is it even possible for Lord Voldemort to appear in the Fantastic Beasts franchise?

We’ve talked about this before, you can see our full breakdown here, but to cut a long story short, Lord Voldemort can appear but he wouldn’t appear as Lord Voldemort. He would appear as Tom Riddle. Assuming there are no massive changes to current Wizarding World canon, the timeline of Fantastic Beasts will span over when Riddle was attending Hogwarts. So while we could very well see a Young Voldemort in a future installment, I doubt it will be Fiennes playing the role.

Of course, it is the Wizarding World, and, you know, magic, so a workaround to feature Fiennes is certainly possible. For example, a glimpse of the future showing Voldemort’s rise to power may occur and that could feature Fiennes.

It will be interesting to see how the two franchises intertwine with one another as future installments of Fantastic Beasts are released. There have been plenty so far and more will no doubt be on the way. Maybe one of them will be Voldemort.
