Avengers: Endgame: Who’s that narrating in the trailer?

A familiar voice is narrating part of the second Avengers: Endgame trailer. We’ve seen her before, so who could this person be?

The second Avengers: Endgame trailer seemed to drop out of nowhere, and the first half of the trailer really seems to celebrate #ThrowbackThursday Marvel style. Instead of scenes of post-snap, saddened Avengers, we’re greeted with footage from Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor’s first movies.

A few seconds into the trailer, we soon hear a familiar voice narrating that half of the trailer. She says: “The world has changed. None of us can go back. All we can do is our best. And sometimes the best we can do is to start over.” No, this isn’t new dialogue from Avengers: Endgame. It’s actually from an MCU movie that came out almost five years ago. So who’s our #TBT speaker?

If you guessed Peggy Carter, call yourself a Marvel expert, because that’s who’s narrating those black and white scenes. The clip is specifically taken from the scene in Captain America: Winter Soldier (shoutout to r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers for the hint), which came out in 2014.

In that tear-jerker scene, Steve Rogers visits an old and gray Peggy Carter. Steve spills his heart out about not being able to fit into this new, present-day world, and Peggy offers him a bit of hope with the line they use in the Endgame trailer.

In the context of Winter Soldier, it gives Steve some encouragement after his disagreement with Nick Fury about Project Insight. But somehow, the quote seems to mean so much more in the context of Infinity War and Endgame. The heroes are practically out of their depths after losing the battle to Thanos. And judging by the trailers so far, they’re lost and confused about what to do next.

The most important bit of advice Peggy gives is that you must start start over, and we see this in more ways than one. Already, you’ll notice none of the original Avengers got snapped away. Thus, we are coming full circle by having these original heroes essentially finish what they started. Rumors also show that the Avengers could be heading back in time to revisit the Battle of New York. In this sense, the Avengers would truly be starting over just by revisiting and correcting the big event that started it all.

Also, when Peggy mentions starting over, is this a hint that “resetting” the universe will be part of getting everything back to normal? We really do hope that’s what happens. Because unlike what would happen if they brought just the snap-away people back to life, we would also get people like Gamora, Heimdall and Loki back — those who died before the snap even happened.

It’s also fascinating that Peggy is the anchor and voice of reason through all this talk of starting from the beginning. Even though Captain America is technically the first Avenger, Peggy was still at the beginning of it all, too, as a founding member of SHIELD. Adding her voice into the trailer really does help to close this narrative and have things come full circle.
