Where’d You Go, Bernadette

Maria Semple’s comedy novel written in 2012 is set to be released onto the big screen on August 9, and this is the witty coming-of-age gem we have all been waiting for.

The story follows young 15-year-old Bee, played by Emma Nelson, as she tries to uncover the secrets of her recently disappeared mother’s life.  Though we would be happy with just Nelson’s heartwarming performance, we are gifted with an all-star cast in this baby!

Cate Blanchett stars as Bernadette, the zanily peculiar mother who vanishes right before the family’s trip to Antarctica. We also get the pleasure of seeing performances by Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, Judy Greer, Troian Bellisario, James Urbaniak, Zoë Chao, and Laurence Fishburne.

Although, this book lands in the comedy genre, the film is definitely more of a dramedy, as it captures Bee’s desperate attempts to locate her mother and find out what really happened to her. As she continues on her journey throughout the film, she begins to uncover the reasons why her mother has always hated people, hated leaving the house, and just lived as an overall odd person.

Moviegoers will latch onto the innocent yet wise character of Bee and root for her throughout her epic journey. And, similarly, they will learn to love Bernadette’s quirky ways as Blanchett kills it on the big screen. You don’t want to miss this mother-daughter tale!
