Game of Thrones season 8: HBO might have teased a massive spoiler

Fans are looking at each frame of the Game of Thrones trailer to try and build theories, but the show’s Twitter may have dropped a big spoiler in a GIF.

Warning: This one is not for the faint of heart who want to remain unspoiled. We’re deep into Game of Thrones season 8 rumor territory here.

Game of Thrones‘ season 8 trailer doesn’t seem to reveal much at first glance, instead basically looking like it was designed to engender more excitement than ever. This is not a bad thing, because there should be some surprises! But at the same time, the show’s official Twitter account called a lot of attention to one specific shot sequence that’s raised a lot of eyebrows.

Now, to be fair, this sequence is as it appears in the trailer: first, a look at Daenerys being sad; then, a shot of Tyrion; finally, we get a shot of Drogon breathing fire.

Here’s the tweet in question.

Spoilers start below. This is your final warning.

No, the caption doesn’t hint at anything. It’s the GIF that says it all. But why does this draw attention? That’s because there’s been a persistent rumor that Tyrion Lannister doesn’t survive season 8 of the show. In fact, the alleged spoiler goes that he’s executed in the Dragonpit specifically.

By splicing together these shots, there’s certainly a suggestion that Tyrion will do something to cause Daenerys to be sad or upset, possibly enough to use her dragon to light him aflame. We know she’s capable of it. Now, you can come up with several counterpoints to this.

First, the lighting doesn’t match between the shots. Daenerys is indoors, Tyrion is outdoors, and Drogon is in the dark. To which we respond, well, would you have put the shots together from the scene itself, if it exists, when there are clearly enough evocative shots from other episodes? The point isn’t to truly make it a spoiler so much as hint at it, or tease that there will be a rift between the claimant queen of the Seven Kingdoms and her Hand.

Speaking of that title, though, you may notice that the shot of Tyrion shows him still wearing his silver pin. This can be dismissed with a similar point as above, possibly with the additional note that Game of Thrones is a show that runs on CGI to create its dragons, who look absolutely stunning in this trailer. If you don’t think there could be a CGI pin, we don’t know what to tell you.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see what really happens come season 8, but things aren’t looking good for Tyrion right now.
