Captain Marvel may be the latest Captain to hit the scene, but we all know Captain America came first. So, where was he during Captain Marvel?

With Captain Marvel only days away, we’re getting even more excited to dive back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and find out what’s in store for the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame. Fans learned about Carol Danvers (a.k.a. Captain Marvel) at the end of Avengers: Infinity War and, among the various questions and theories formed around the highly anticipated heroine, wondered where she fit into the MCU timeline.

Captain Marvel is a total throwback movie, mainly taking place in 1995. However, we also see shots of a young Carol Danvers, indicating that the film could even potentially go as far back as the late ’70s or the early ’80s. Knowing this, it’s only natural to wonder where certain characters from the MCU are at the time of the powerful Captain Marvel’s start. One such character we’re curious about is Captain America.

Where is the illustrious Steve Rogers during this time? As we know, Steve’s timeline began in the 1940s during World War II. Starting out as a scrawny, sickly, young man who would give anything to serve his country, he found his opportunity to do so when he was enlisted by Dr. Abraham Erskine. The German scientist sought out Steve, knowing that he was the perfect candidate for his latest creation–a powerful Super Soldier Serum, which is what gives Captain America his powers.

Steve goes on to fight in the war and encounters a villainous group called HYDRA, led by Red Skull, who wants to use the Tesseract as a powerful weapon of war. After a final battle between HYDRA agents and Red Skull, Steve purposefully crashes Red Skull’s jet into the cold Atlantic in an effort to keep the villain from destroying the world with the Tesseract, which was created on Asgard.

When he plummets to his assumed death, nearly 70 years later, the first Avenger is found by S.H.I.E.L.D, frozen in a block of ice. From this point on, Steve’s character is more complex as he has to become reacquainted with the modern world while simultaneously dealing with his own internal battles.

So it’s safe to say, during the ’90s when Captain Marvel takes place, Steve Rogers is frozen in place. But it just may be Carol Danvers’ arrival on Earth that makes Fury want to seek out even more powerful beings and potential heroes like Steve.

Later on, good old Cap becomes a leader of the Avengers. He takes on the responsibility with respect and a deep-set love for his team. With Avengers: Endgame only a short time away, as well, it’ll be interesting to see how Captain America interacts with Brie Larson’s character, as it would seem that they both are similar in a lot of ways. While Steve doesn’t appear in Captain Marvel, due to still being frozen in ice, perhaps we’ll be reminded of him through Carol Danvers and her time in the military.

We hope that both Captains will get the chance to fight alongside each other soon, because they seem like they would be the ultimate dream team. Plus, don’t forget to click “Next” to find out what happens to our other Avengers in the ’90s.
