Captain Marvel: What to know about Yon-Rogg before watching
The leader of Starforce looks to be an important character in the rise of Carol Danvers. Here’s what we know ahead of Captain Marvel.
Before you watch Captain Marvel, it’s probably a good idea to know a little something about all the characters. After all, we’re headed back to a mostly unknown period in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Here, we’ll be focusing on Yon-Rogg — or at least we think he’s Yon-Rogg.
It’s a bit of a mystery. All the same, here’s what we do know about Jude Law’s character as we’ll see him in the movie.
Superpowers
Yon-Rogg is a Kree military officer, who is Carol Danvers’ superior officer on Starforce. He has a bit of a Ronan the Accuser mentality in that he firmly believes in the Kree, so he’s very dedicated.
Superpowers, you ask? The standard Kree abilities—superhuman strength, stamina, agility, and being great at hand-to-hand combat.
What is his role in the film?
He’s definitely a mentor to Carol and helps train her to use all of her new powers. Expect some tension to come from other members of Starforce because of their relationship.
What else can we expect?
Well, in the comics, Yon-Rogg is partially responsible for Carol’s powers. It’s all an accident, like it always is. He’s attempting to battle Mar-Vell and uses a Psyche-Magnetron to go up against him (think powerful Kree tech). Unfortunately, the Magnetron gets damaged during the battle, and Yon-Rogg shields Carol from the explosion.
But she still absorbs Mar-Vell’s genetic structure, hnce all of her fun powers.
So then Jude Law isn’t playing Mar-Vell?
No, probably not unless there’s a crazy twist in the film. That was always the rumor when his casting was announced, but it turns out he’s Yon-Rogg instead.
There is always the possibility that Marvel took some liberties from the source material and combined aspects of Yon-Rogg and Mar-Vell for Law’s character. But we’ll have to see how things play out.
