Dame Maggie Smith to take to the stage once again

Dame Maggie Smith is set to take to the stage for the first time in over a decade in the up and coming stage performance, A German Life.

It’s been some time since Dame Maggie Smith, known for her time in the Harry Potter franchise as Professor McGonagall, has appeared on stage, but she is set to do just that this Spring in the stage performance A German Life, by Christopher Hampton.

It’s actually been 12 years since Dame Maggie Smith took to the stage. In that time she has been a titan in both TV and movies, appearing in all eight of the Harry Potter films, the highly successful British Drama Downton Abbey, and so much more.

The play that she is coming out of her 12 year hiatus for, A German Life, is about the life of Brunhilde Pomsei. Dame Maggie Smith will play the role of Pomsei and will showcase her story which takes place in 1930s Germany where she worked for a variety of employers, including a Jewish insurance broker and Joseph Goebbels.

After the war, Pomsei’s story continues with her being interned in a Soviet concentration camp. She was held their until 1950, and it wasn’t until 2017, when she was at the age of 105, did she decided to tell her story to a group of Austrian filmmakers.

A German Life is a solo drama, so if you decide to go and see the performance expect to see a lot of Dame Maggie Smith who will no doubt nail the performance the moment she steps out on stage.

Previews for A German Life are scheduled to begin on April 6, and it will officially open on April 12 where it will run for a five week period at the Bridge Theatre in London.
