Fast Color (March 29)

The Plot: A woman with mysterious abilities (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) goes on the run but is forced to return home to the daughter she left behind.

In 2016 director Julia Hart put Timothée Chalamet on our radar with the introspective feature, Miss Stevens. Now she’s back with an original superhero tale that looks at the idea of legacy and femininity. The first trailer for Fast Color looks poignant, exciting, and heartbreaking, giving Gugu Mbatha-Raw another meaty role. The film has been on the festival circuit for the last year, where it’s racked up amazing reviews. We don’t often see superhero films starring women of color, so it’s saying something that we’ll have this and Captain Marvel released relatively close together.

The first trailer gives us just enough mystery to whet the appetite, introducing Ruth and her abilities. From there the film becomes a cat-and-mouse thriller with Ruth having to hide and help her daughter control her own powers, which are different from her mom’s. Lorraine Toussaint and David Strathairn also pop up in the cast. The beautiful poster also evokes a world that’s colorful, rich, and breathtaking. If it’s anything like Miss Stevens, this is going to be a deep examination of people and their relationships, with superpowers!
