Queen of rom-coms Meg Ryan plans to make her own

Meg Ryan is taking her skills as a rom-com actress to good use with plans to write and direct her own romantic comedy film. We hope this movie gets made!

Meg Ryan is known for being a romantic comedy actress. While she has had many other films where she didn’t play a romantic comedy heroine, her most well-known roles came from movies such as Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally.

If you’re a fan of rom-coms, especially from the ’90s, you know that Meg Ryan was queen of this genre for a while. From silly movies such as Kate & Leopold to iconic romance films like You’ve Got Mail, Ryan seems to be in every popular romantic comedy until she wasn’t.

After the ’90s, the actress became less prevalent on screen after attempts to play roles outside her typical genre. Still, fans of Ryan and the genre can get excited, because she is back in the game! But… not exactly the way you’d expect.

In an interview with The New York Times, Ryan says she is actually working on writing her own romantic comedy film. Ryan worked with the famous Nora Ephron back in the day, and the two of them had a close friendship and working relationship. This relationship might have given her the insight and interposition to write and direct her own movie.

In the interview, Ryan says the project doesn’t have a name yet and that she wants to direct it, too. She told The New York Times:

"I’m aware now that romantic comedies are confections, but they have construction. There’s architecture. It’s not something I was aware of back then."

While romantic comedies are often written off as being frivolous, Ryan makes a good point about how there is an art and a structure to these films that takes effort and skill to create.

As far as which romantic comedies are her recent favorites, Ryan noted The Big Sick had caught her attention. She added that she and her daughter are into all kinds of rom-coms, sharing that over the holidays they watched It Happened One Night and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

While details about the romantic comedy she’s creating are still few, we can definitely say that we’re on board to see this movie if it ends up getting made.

We love the idea of Meg Ryan, who is probably the most iconic rom-com actress along with the likes of Julia Roberts, going from on camera to behind the camera. Ryan definitely has a ton of experience in the genre, and we would love to see what she brings to the table as writer and director.
