Rainbow Johnson – Black-ish

What we know: Tracee Ellis Ross is the daughter of the goddess we know as Diana Ross, and she’s every bit the style icon her mother was. This translates into her character on the ABC sitcom Blacki-sh. Rainbow is a successful anesthesiologist, raising five children with a difficult husband and meddling in-laws. She has a lot on her plate.

Although she is all these things, she doesn’t let just one define her, and she’s the sum of all these parts. She’s patient, socially aware, and always aware of the world around here. She has everyone’s best interests at heart, and you can just tell she always comes from a place of love.

What we see: Suburban sophisticate. As a mother myself, I admire Rainbow’s style because she looks like she could easily transition from a playdate at the park to happy hour at a chic bar. Even though a lot of her wardrobe is loose fitting and and casual, she always makes sure to pair with funky accessories and hair that slays all day.

She’s unafraid to play around with patterns and bright colors, and she pulls it together with a giant hoop. The hoop, as any fashionista knows all too well, is a staple in any wardrobe and takes any outfit from minivan to Aston- Martin. It’s the universal solvent.

How to take it all in: Rainbow’s style has evolved chicly and intentionally over the first five seasons, which you can see on Hulu. But she’s really coming into her own on the current season, airing on ABC now.
