Vanessa “Van” Keefer – Atlanta

What we know: Although it might be tempting to just reduce her to “Earn’s Girl” or “Lottie’s Mom,” Van is actually one the most well-rounded and complicated characters on Atlanta. She’s strong and smart, and works as a teacher to support herself and her young daughter – often times working to support Lottie’s father as well.

If there is one thing we know about Van, it’s that she is capable. She knows her own mind and is super assertive about arranging her life so that she puts herself and her daughter first. Sometimes this means making hard decisions in her life, but you can trust Van to do the right thing.

What we see: Fresh and modern. Van has a breezy philosophy when it comes to her style, and her signature going-out look usually contains flowy tanks and lots of layered jewelry. She reimagines her hair for every look, adding to the whimsy of it all. Every single detail is carefully considered, and the sum of the parts is completely magnificent.

She’s the kind of girl who could make a paper sack look effortlessly elegant, and her unawareness of her power just compounds the whole effect.

How to take it all in: You can watch both seasons on Hulu right now. This show is incredible and interesting, but creator Donald Glover is doing some really interesting things in season 2. Stick around long enough to see all the creativity at work.
