Someone very close to Thor could be returning in Avengers: Endgame

It’s possible another fallen figure from Thor’s life could return on screen in Avengers: Endgame. And no, we aren’t talking about Loki.

With all the reports and rumors out about who’s in Avengers: Endgame, it’s starting to feel like one big family reunion. It also feels like we’ll be sitting through a long list of credits as we sift through the massive amount of actors in this “most ambitious crossover” movie,  but it’ll all be worth it to see their faces again.

One of those faces, as the latest report goes, may be someone very close to Thor. Not his dad, not his brother…. but his mother. This comes according to Revenge of the Fans, which revealed that Rene Russo (Frigga) could be returning to the franchise. Of course, as we do with all casting rumors, this one has to be taken with a grain of salt, too. But it’s still worthy of some speculation.

While Revenge of the Fans did not disclose their sources for the casting news, the community on r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers gathered around to confirm that some of them knew about the news via a previous leak. One Reddit user even recalled a possible leak where Russo’s hairstylist was seen on set. It may be a bit of a reach to use a hairstylist as confirmation for a character’s return, but hey, we’ll take any speculation we can get.

If her character were to appear, it wouldn’t be completely out of place. Valkyrie will also seemingly return in Endgame, with fans becoming suspicious after Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth made a joint trip to Atlanta together last year (where Marvel movies typically film). This could mean Thor joins up with Valkyrie at some point in the movie, where she may be helping the remaining 25 percent of the Asgardians who survived.  (If you remember, Thanos killed half the Asgardians during the first attack on their ship. And then half of that half got snapped away, sadly.)

In the same Reddit thread, someone suggested the possibility of both Hel and Valhalla being shooting locations for the movie — with Frigga being in Valhalla, the honorable afterlife realm, of course. And it could be possible that Thor and Valkyrie make that trip for a number of reasons to see his fallen mother and even father. (Cannot confirm myself if Loki’s worthy of being in Valhalla. So that may be another mission all on its own if they want to find him in Hel.)

Otherwise, Frigga could appear in the movie during a scene when the Avengers travel through time. We’ve heard so much about supposed time-traveling Avengers like Captain Marvel, and the Quantum Realm being the key to everything. So, there’s also a possibility that Thor gets to see his mother again, if only by going back in time.

(Then again, Thor hasn’t been seen wearing those any of those nifty Avengers team suits, which could be used for time travel. So maybe he won’t be part of Team Time Travel at all.)

At the very least, Thor could be visited by his mother the same way he was visited by Odin after his death in Thor: Ragnarok. Odin came to Thor in a vision, as he reminded Thor to harness his lightning powers. So it may just be that Frigga appears to Thor in a vision to bring him some much-needed motherly guidance during these hard times.

Rene Russo’s IMDb page shows Velvet Buzzsaw (coming to Netflix Feb. 1) as her only project in 2019. So we may just have to enjoy seeing her with Mysterio (er, Jake Gyllenhaal) for the time being.
