On Project Runway All Stars’ new episode, the designers might be feeling a little constrained with their new outerwear designs.
Project Runway All Stars is taking a slightly more traditional approach to this week’s challenge. After the travel-inspired unconventional challenge, the designers might need a little more structure to their creations. Which designer will can find the right support this week?
According to Lifetime, here’s what this week’s synopsis states:
"International All Stars create outwear from underwear by transforming corsets into runway looks. Rebecca Minkoff and Olivia Culpo guest judge."
This synopsis is basically bare bones. While it is clear that the designers must use a corset in the design, the other inspiration is lacking. Can just a corset inspire a winning look?
A couple of items are quite concerning about this challenge. First, if a designer isn’t familiar with creating or designing a corset, this challenge will be a nightmare. This type of design takes knowledge and skill. Anyone who has worn a poorly constructed corset can attest to this notion.
Second, no one needs to wear underwear as outerwear anymore. Hopefully Madonna’s fashion from the 90s isn’t coming back into vogue. Those nude corsets and jackets weren’t flattering on many people.
Still, a structured piece of outwear can be sophisticated. While it may not need to have a corset, a tailored fit can create a fabulous silhouette. Is there a balance between these two types of design?
This Project Runway All Stars season has been a little strange. Although bringing together all the winners sounds like a good concept, no one seems to be excelling in any challenge. The majority of looks have been safe and, in some cases, boring.
Fashion should never be boring. While no one wants to purposely create a horrible design, at least that design provokes a reaction. Right now, everything is nice. No wonder why JC Penney ended its partnership and won’t be producing these looks.
