“Whatcha Say” – Jason Derulo

Remember a time before Jason Derulo first sang to us his own name to us? Back in 2009, he danced his way onto the scene with his debut single “Whatcha Say,” and it resonated with audiences because it sounded awfully familiar.

Derulo’s debut sounded so familiar because it sampled the 2005 Imogen Heap song “Hide and Seek,” which a lot of people know because of its use on the season two finale of The OC, which was later parodied in an SNL skit, and then became a meme years later. So Derulo was destined to have a hit on his hands — or a flop — but luckily, it was successful. The song opens up with the line “Mmm whatcha say, mm that you only meant well…”

The song was actually appreciated by critics, who liked how he mixed his equally-as-autotuned soulful vocals with Imogen’s and an infectious pop beat. Derulo released two music videos, one for the original version, and one for the acoustic version, with producer J.R. Rotem. He also recorded a French version with singer Fanny J in 2010.

Derulo shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and we all know that wasn’t his last time on the charts over the years! Next up, he’ll be appearing in the Cats movie as Rum Tum Tugger, along with stars like Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, and Ian McKellen. He’s come a long way!
