“Obsessed” – Mariah Carey

Much like the rest of us, Mariah Carey is obsessed with Mean Girls, so much so that she wrote a song inspired by the infamous Regina George line “Why are you so obsessed with me?” For Carey, though, it wasn’t about Janis Ian, it was about a certain rapper who couldn’t stop talking about the songstress: Eminem.

Back in the early-to-mid-2000s, the rapper claimed to have dated Carey and then went on to bash her in several songs. Carey responded with her own song, and then it went back and forth for a while. When “Obsessed” first came out in June 2009, the media speculation about it being aimed at Eminem were almost immediate, probably because Carey plays her own stalker in the video who bears a striking resemblance to the rapper in his baggy sweatsuits.

The music video opens with Carey looking straight at the camera and saying the line, “And I was like, why are you so obsessed with me?” before it shows the singer arriving at the Plaza Hotel in New York, where her stalker is watching her. Eminem continued to talk trash about Carey, but Carey couldn’t be bothered. “Obsessed” was her 27th top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, so she definitely got the last laugh!
