“My Life Would Suck Without You” – Kelly Clarkson

As most of you probably know, Kelly Clarkson got her big break on the first ever season of American Idol in 2002. Nobody knew if the singer would last beyond her first album, especially since at the time, there weren’t many failed reality competition winners to compare her to. Fast forward to 2009, and Clarkson was releasing her fourth studio album, All I Ever Wanted.

Clarkson’s 2007 album My December was a lot darker than her previous work, so with her next record, she wanted to go for a more pop sound. She enlisted the help of big-time producers and songwriters, including Max Martin, who’s probably best known for crafting the masterpiece “…Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. The result was a radio-friendly, bop-filled album, and the lead single was a perfect representation of what was to come from Clarkson.

The song blew up the charts and even earned Clarkson the record for having the furthest jump on the Billboard Hot 100, when it went from #97 to #1 in its second week. The song is about a couple that’s constantly fighting, breaking up, and getting back together. They clearly can’t live without each other, because Clarkson’s life would suck without him.

Even though the song had a more happy-go-lucky, fun sound, behind the scenes there was some drama. The song was co-written and produced by Dr. Luke (yes, him again), but Clarkson refused to work with him after having bad experiences with him in the past, but the label insisted. She basically rewrote the song to be more personal to her, but refused a writing credit because she didn’t want her name to be associated with Luke’s. Even with all the drama, the song was a hit and we love Clarkson for at least standing her ground.
