Captain Marvel may know something we don’t about the Infinity Stones

We may not know how exactly Captain Marvel will lead into Avengers: Endgame, but it’s becoming clear that Carol Danvers may know more about Infinity Stones.

As we approach the release of Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, one thing has seemed pretty clear: Nick Fury’s distress call to Captain Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War is mostly because she’s one of the strongest heroes out there, theories about how he knows to call her and why aside. However, new information from the man who plays Fury may give more context as to why he calls Carol.

Per a set interview with ET, Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that the Tesseract plays some sort of role in the film. Specifically, it seems to be a “power core” on “a ship that belonged to a doctor from Carol Danvers’ past,” which ET‘s question specifies as being a Kree ship. That’s something of a move from previously established canon, which holds that the Tesseract stayed with S.H.I.E.L.D. after Howard Stark found it, up until Loki gets his hands on it in The Avengers.

Granted, this might be a reason to keep Fury and Carol together. That same interview establishes that Fury plays a pretty heavy part in the film, and if he encounters Carol while on the trail of the missing Tesseract, then that would tie storylines together fairly neatly.

Additionally, if it’s on a Kree ship, that suggests that this doctor knows something about what it is and what it’s capable of. Jude Law has made a big deal of mentioning the Supreme Intelligence, for example, and if this doctor has access to it, then it’s not out of the question that the Kree could know something about the Infinity Stones, and that something has become part of the Supreme Intelligence.

To extend that, that means it’s possible Carol also knows more about the Infinity Stones. She at least has access to that knowledge, which would likely be a step beyond anything S.H.I.E.L.D. and Fury know.

That brings us back to Fury calling Carol at the end of Infinity War. Does the Supreme Intelligence know enough to know what the Infinity Stones could do together? If so, that helps add some nuance to Carol’s abilities to combat Thanos. It might not just be about her brawn — it could be about her brains, too.

Captain Marvel arrives in theaters March 8; Avengers: Endgame follows on April 26.
