There was one glaring Stan Lee cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. But that wasn’t it. The Spider-Verse directors are challenging us to look out for more.
As of Sunday night, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a Golden Globe-winning movie. The spectacular animated film about new Spider-Man Miles Morales is a hit that features one of the most creative animation styles and an equally excellent story to match. On top of that, it’s the first Marvel movie to be released after Stan Lee’s death, making it quite bittersweet to see him appear in the film.
In the movie, fans saw Lee as the shop owner who Miles buys his Spider-Man costume from. And to make things even more bittersweet, the pep talk Lee gives Miles is all about him keeping his head up after Peter Parker’s death. It was a sweet reminder, even for the audience, to just keep swimming, even when things look bad.
But there is a bit of good news through all of this, and that’s that Stan Lee has more than one cameo in Into the Spider-Verse. This comes directly from the directors, who told revealed to The New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan that there’s so much more to look out for.
That’s right, if you saw the movie in theaters and thought you maybe saw somebody who looks like Stan Lee, you were probably right. It’s like a theatrical version of Where’s Waldo, which should make watching the movie even more exciting to watch. While the directors didn’t indicate how many cameos there are in total, at least we have the hint that they occur during scenes where there’s a crowd.
One possible scene might include the memorial for Peter Park that Miles attends. In the crowd outside of the church, most people are all wearing Spider-Man masks. But given the animators have been keen on placing Lee in crowds, this might be a sure shot for seeing him pop up.
There are other moments, too, that featured crowds in the movie. As all superhero movies go, the big, public fight scenes always draw crowds. But there are also shots that take us through the densely populated New York City, such as the police chase where Miles drags an unconscious Peter Parker with him. Or, could we even see Stan Lee eating dinner at Kingpin’s banquet? The possibilities are endless, and we can’t wait to see what lies ahead.
There’s no home-release date for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse just yet. But if you saw Stan Lee in the movie outside of his big cameo, let us know where in the comments!
